The mission of the Deep River Project is to reach the familiar and unfamiliar and share the story of the Spirituals. Negro Spirituals or simply, Spirituals are part of the musical history of the United States. They are the songs of the enslaved and tell the story of a people that otherwise had no voice. The Deep Rover Project includes the Deep River Project and Deep River Singers as part of its efforts to preserve the Spirituals and teach the broader community their melodies and meanings. By sharing these songs and learning their story, we can better understand the human experience and history that links us all together.
